of course its tyra, which is always idiotic and unbelievable but i'm pretty sure a lot of people hold the same opinion as the girl i am annoyed at.....
its a 'social experiment' (but when tyra does this they are never fair experiments) anyway she took an obese girl who was 350lbs and they called this other girl a skinny bitch, but she looked like a normal weight to me, bigger than me when i'm not pregnant but not chubby at all.... the obese girl has a facebook that's all about hating 'skinny bitches' and the skinny girl has a facebook about people NOT discriminating against skinny people saying they're anorexic all the time... anyway the overweight lady was sooooooo angry and soooooo bitter towards skinny people, and the skinny girl said she doesn't dislike overweight people she just doesn't think its healthy... and then that's when it started.... EVERYONE freaking out saying its so mean of her to call being obese unhealthy!!!!!!!!!!! ahhh are you joking me? this isn't her opinion, this is fact. it is unhealthy to be obese. this lady was just arguing that even though she is obese she is healthy... doesn't she understand that when you are overweight whether you have medical problems yet or not you are at a way higher risk for them simply because of being overweight?!??! that's UNHEALTHY! its so annoying that people can get mad about someone saying its unhealthy to be overweight, she didn't say it was ugly or anything in fact she said 'i think you are a confident woman and you are a beautiful person, i just would worry that you are unhealthy.' how is that mean? anyway so tyra had them sort of trade places for a day and they had to eat each others diet and the skinny girls breakfast was whole wheat toast and a good portion of nuts, and all organic... the overweight girls breakfast was canned peaches, cereal and donuts! i don't know, this just blows my mind.... do people really live this much in denial that they convince themselves that food that holds no nutrition is still healthy to eat? most people who are thin (not all i know) but most have to eat healthy or not a ton and have to work out to be that way, i get that its harder for some people but that doesn't mean they are healthy when they don't try.... it just chaps my ass. i think people should be treated with respect no matter what size but i don't think its good AT ALL that tyra is promoting women being in denial about the important health risks that automatically come with being overweight. its annoying because tyra is always saying that be discriminated against as a skinny person isn't as bad as being discriminated against as an overweight person, but its the same... its discrimination.. hello.... people saying you are anorexic or saying you look gross because they can see your ribs (especially when thats naturally the way your body is...like mine used to be) is just as mean as someone saying you're ugly or something cause you're fat... the difference to me was that when you are overweight, as millions and millions of people prove every day... you can change it (it may be freaking hard) but you can (joy fit club yeaya) and, sometimes when you are sooo thin and your body is just like that you can drink ensure which is like 350 calories for 5oz and still NOT gain weight. i used to eat INSANELY, like share a basket of chicken tenders with Carissa and then eat 2 hot dogs for lunch, or a personal pizza a pack of donuts and chocolate milk and NEVER gain weight... so if people said i was anorexic it was like 'um... are you serious!?!?!' plus i feel like a lot of people who are overweight aren't doing all they can to lose it.... I'm sure people will take offense to that but i don't think people are truly trying to lose it unless they are eating ALL whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, meat and milk that doesn't have hormones in it, not eating refined sugar or limiting it severely, exercising 3 to 5 times a week (probably five cause that's how much i even have to work out to keep weight off), and eating an appropriate amount of calories, not eating a ton... thats what i have to do to keep weight off and its always been easy for me, so if its not easy for someone else if they are really trying they're going to surely have to work harder and that sucks, but for some reason that's just the way it is.... anyway i feel like if people want to stay overweight and they are confident that way its fine, who cares, but at least dont act like its healthy or like you're doing everything you can to get the weight off.
thank God for Oprah cause at least she is inspiring people and teaching people how to change it and how to become healthy and what healthy is! instead of just making excuses and wanting women to live in denial.

none of the things i said were healthy are up for debate.... meat without hormones or antibiotics, whole grains, fruits veggies, not much refined sugar.. these are called 'whole foods' because they are complete, they are natural, they are nutritious without being harmful... other things are up for debate because processing changes them... we know that some ingredients like high fructose corn syrup makes the sensors in your brain that tell you you are full dulled, so you eat more than you need... we know that white flour, sugar and rice add calories and weight but do not have nutrients in them, whole grains are the original forms of these things that have not been processed, they still contain nutrients so you are getting something out of them instead of feeling full without getting the vitamins and minerals needed... this is not my opinion, talk to a nutritionist. studies have shown that people who eat whole grains have less belly fat because it metabolizes differently, we know that belly fat is more harmful for us than any other fat on our bodies because it strains our organs the most....
i do think this is an important issue because a lot of people are in denial in this country about what healthy is.... we are bombarded with media telling us that the ingredients in mcdonalds is healthy for God sake! and some people believe that!.... but the ingredients dont matter when they are processed, have antibiotics, hormones, salt, and are deep fried.... because then they have become more harmful than helpful.... i get that there are things i regard as healthy but are up for debate (like soy) which i am constantly looking into because i want to only put what is nutritious and beneficial for me into my body... not because i want to be strict but because i want to feel good inside, i want to be here for a long time for my children and grandchildren, i want to take care of my body to the best of my ability i believe that is my responsibility.... after a while when you cut those things that are unhealthy out you start to not even want them.... and then if one day you do and you eat it it doesnt matter as much because your body is strong and healthy and most the time when i do do that i dont like it anymore....
the thing about eating healthy too is that you dont always see the affects right away or you do but you dont realize that's what its from, a lot of people are allergic to dairy and dont even know it, then they stop eating it and things they didn't know were because of dairy just go away.... and kids... their moods change with what they eat, how often they get sick changes with what they eat, as it does with adults... i know genetics play a big part in some peoples weight issues and everyones health issues, but we have learned that a lot of that CAN be overcome with the way we take care of ourselves.. that's whats soooo amazing about it! anyway i dont want to be harsh or hurt peoples feelings, but more than that i want to express my opinion and what matters to me....
i hope you all see more of what i mean and understand that i was not 'making up' what is healthy, that would be like if i said 'cigarettes are bad for you' and someone said 'you can't just say that cigarettes are bad for you because its your opinion' we know they are bad for you.... just like we know that things like high fructose corn syrup is, like partially hydrogenated oils are, like refined sugar is, like parabens are, modified corn starch, hormones, antibiotics.... we know they are not good for us, but they are still in so much of the food at the store.... look up the affects of those things, then look up the affects of the food i mentioned.. you will see what i mean. maybe check out this website its amazing to see how healing fresh foods can be, that the food that comes from the earth is perfect and has all we need in it just the way it is... if anything shows me God, that is definitely something that does. (that website is cool cause it is non profit website and doesn't have commercial influence... its just the facts we know about what certain foods do... its so cool to see what diseases certain veggies help prevent etc... )

this was really hard for me to read... i think it has SOME truth to it, but really unless you are overweight yourself you shouldn't decide who is healthy and who is not. there are alot of people who are overweight, who make healthy lifestyle decisions but can't help how their bodies are built. i know, i am one of them. i don't drink soda, i eat a healthy balanced and i exercise on a regular basis. if you looked at me, you would probably consider me to be fat- or even obese. i have dealt with alot of discrimination over my life from these "skinny bitches", many of them who eat worse, or more than i do and do not exercise. so no i don't think its unfair for them to say you can't call someone unhealthy just because they are overweight. there are a lot of overweight people who are not healthy, but there are also a lot of skinny people who are unhealthy as well. you can't always judge a book by its cover. you can't always control your metabolism either. i appreciate your "honest" opinons but i have a hard time taking this particular post seriously coming from a skinny girl!

someone who i skinny like you has NO right to judge someone who is fat. who cares if you don't think they are doing all they can to lose it. who says they want to. they might be focused on making changes in their life or whatever, but again- not your business. i think the whole point of tyra's show was to raise awareness and do what she can to stop discrimination. fat people are discriminated against every single day and its wrong. "fatcism" is the only socially acceptable form of discrimination and it needs to end. they are discriminated against in certain jobs, because they are judged that they are lazy. they are discriminated in clothing stores- by the styles and sizes that are available. they are riduculed to no end- all because they carry a few extra pounds on their frame. yes they may not do everything in the world to change it, but they may have given it a few honest trys and until you've had to try and lose a significant amount of weight- you have NO right to judge. this post is truly offensive!
yea who knows if i would think you are obese, cause you didn't even say who you are, but i'm not talking about MY opinion of what obese is, i'm talking about medically there is such a thing as obese and automatically even if you are eating well and exercising you have more risks due to that extra weight.. some people do have genetic disorders which make it so that even if they do exercise and do everything right they can't lose weight and they have to go to more extreme measures to do so... i dont think skinny people who eat crap are healthy either, but its not their weight that makes them unhealthy its the stuff they eat. i mean its obvious we have a huuuuuge problem with this in america, that's why there's national campaigns to end childhood obesity because it is becoming an epidemic and it is not healthy. anyway, we dont have to agree on this, but dont write off what i'm saying because you feel defensive, or like i dont know because i'm skinny.... cause that doesn't make sense.... and you're just judging me because i'm skinny.... who cares? that doesnt mean that i dont know what healthy is, and that certainly doesn't mean i dont work hard to be healthy, because i do. you can't judge a book by its cover, like you can't say a person is good or bad based on what they look like... but its just fact that people who carry extra weight carry higher risks of certain diseases, it wasn't my decision for it to be that way, that's just the way it is, we have to really understand that or americas children are going to continue to be the victims of a diabetes epidemic when they dont need to be.

first, i want to say that i believe you when you say that you are only trying to be honest and express your own opinions...not offend people.
it was good to hear you say how much you work out and what you eat because from the mind of someone who has struggled with weight, i often assume skinny girls don't have to try hard at all.
but i think it should be said that some people are assumed to be overweight who might not necessarily be. i'm a bigger girl, my frame is wider than a lot of girls. i'm over six feet tall and when i am as thin as i can be, while still healthy, i'm a size 14...not what most people would consider skinny. people come in all shapes and sizes. i think as long as you are being the right size for you AND healthy, it's all good. not everyone is going to be tiny no matter how much this great country of ours tells us we should be.

i'm 100 pounds and i get crap about being too skinny a lot. but i exercise and i eat healthy food. honestly, i think there's a huge link with the misconceptions of what healthy food is and people eating crappy food. the more i learned about the effects of high fructose corn syrup and white refined flours and hydrogenated oils, the less i wanted to eat all of it. now i only eat whole wheat bread and lots more fruits and veggies and protein, but not crispy chicken anymore haha. i don't feel like i'm judging overweight people, but it just makes me think they'd feel a lot better if they just made healthier choices. when i cut out most white sugar, i felt UNBELIEVABLY better...just like...i had more energy, and i was happier, haha. i'd never go back to drinking soda and eating candy regularly.
and sometimes i do have my cravings for fries, but apparently in n out uses better oil than the other fast food joints and they change their oil daily [[did you know mcdonalds only changes their oil ONCE a WEEK??? disgusting]]. but when i begin to crave a lot of fried foods, the thought of the atheroscleratic plaque building up in my arteries is enough to make me wait until i get back home to snack on baked pita and hummus.
and you're right, once you go healthy and organic, when you do occasionally eat junk food, it just doesn't taste good anymore. i used to eat 3 packs of skittles a day when i was like 11-12, and i had just one skittle a couple weeks ago and it was disgustingly sweet-i spat it out. gross.
ps-i think soy is healthy, at least for girls. apparently, soy milk and other soy products are loaded with estrogen.
one of the most offensive things you can say to a skinny person is to ask them if they are anorexic. anorexia is not just something skinny chicks do to stay skinny...it is a psychological disorder. it's the equivalent of asking someone if they are schizophrenic or bipolar, which is rude to say the least, and something people would certainly get up-in-arms offended over.
but of course, it's ok to verbally beat up on skinny chicks, right? but god forbid you tell a fat person they are unhealthy, let alone mention they are obese or fat (which seems to be like using the "n" word these days...am i supposed to say "weight challenged" now?)

I'm what most people would consider fat and you know what? I'm fabulous! If all you skinny people need a diet and exercise and all that extra crap to feel good about yourselves maybe you should think about whether you're really happy? Some people use drugs to feel a high and some people constantly exercise to get that endorphin fix. Natural or not they're both drugs, they're both addiction. Look, I'm not saying eating healthy and exercising is bad, but it has its dark side.
I applaud your effort to stem child obesity. Children do not have the maturity or understanding to decide about societies standards and true happiness. Being "over weight" should be an adult decision.
Gandhi once said that, "It is no love if you love only those who love you". I would like to humbly take this a step further and say, "It is no happiness if you're only happy under societies stamp of approval".

lets be honest- yea the point isn't being addicted to exercise, and certainly not JUST for the sake of making yourself happy, although it is perfectly fine to make yourself happy by doing things you love to do... its to be healthy... your heart isn't healthy when its not exercised... its just not. and being happy and being healthy are two different things, but i happen to be both. i'd rather be happy AND healthy then happy being unhealthy.... i totally think any person has the choice to decide to be overweight and take the chance of the risks that come with that. but i'm not going to say that's a healthy choice, that's like saying its a good choice to walk in the middle of a busy street, i mean someone has the right to do it, but that doesn't mean there isn't a higher risk they're going to get hit, than a person walking on the sidewalk.. and i would promote NOT walking in the middle of a busy street cause that's what i believe is safer just like i will promote being a healthy weight while eating healthy AND exercising.... because i believe that is what is safest. i definitely want women AND men to feel happy and secure in their bodies, but not if that's going to go hand in hand with denial of what is true, because that is unhealthy for our souls, and lets face it its not true happiness.

That last comment is ridiculous. I guess you think that we should start telling kids that if they feel "fabulous" doing harm to their body, then it's okay? Who said this is just about being happy or "fabulous"? It's about being HEALTHY and feeling a responsibility to take care of your body. That doesn't mean you have to be addicted to exercise or obsessed with counting calories.
It doesn't matter whether you're 300 pounds or 100 pounds, both can be equally unhealthy, and just because you feel "fabulous" being in that state doesn't mean it's good for you.
I'm 5'3" and petite and never weighed over 100 pounds until recently, but you know what? I was so unhealthy my entire childhood and into early adulthood. I used to NEVER exercise and I never paid attention to what I ate (lots of soda, fast food, etc.) because I though "I'm not fat so I guess I'm blessed with being able to eat whatever I want and not exercise!" It's only been in the last couple years that I've realized how awful that mindset is. Now I'm so much more conscious about what I put into my body and how I spend my free time (being active daily just by going for a mile walk or whatever). And being healthier hasn't caused me to lose any weight. If anything, I've gained weight, so that's really not what this is about.
I think the point of this blog post wasn't to say that the heavier you are, the more unhealthy you are. It is FACT that being overweight is associated with a lot of health risks. But in the same way, being underweight is also associated with health risks. All these people need to stop being defensive about their weight and realize that it's about being healthy, not just being "fat" or "skinny."
well i'm petite and people think just because i'm short and fit that i don't have to work for it, and that's annoying and sometimes offensive to me that i have to stick up for myself and defend that i'm not just one of those "skinny girls" who doesn't have to even try. i have to work for my body too even if i'm naturally a little smaller.
if i say anything about feeling gross for not eating right or eating well and say that i want to work out more, people roll their eyes and tell me i don't need it and i'm so skinny and on and on but that's just ridic because just because i'm short and small framed doesn't mean i shouldn't try to be at my best. and it's so true that it's important to do the best we can and eat whole foods to benefit our bodies and be healthy and strong for our futures and the futures of our loved ones...
and eating raw and whole foods makes such a huge difference that unlsess people really give it a try, they shouldn't argue against it or even defend anything else because eating whole foods changes so many things about our bodies inside and out, and moods/overall health and wellness..

just to defend my comment that "fatcism" is the only socially acceptable form of discrimination.... its true, its not obsurd and as a "real fatty" i experience it on a day to day basis. i've been significantly overweight since childhood, although i did not actually KNOW that i was until about 8th grade. my parents kept me sheltered from it. i was told i was "athletic" and "big boned" and just thats how God made me, etc. i was actually athletic, as in i did particpate year round in sports and i got plenty of activity as a child. i was never taught proper nutrition other than to "eat my vegtables", white starchy carbs were served at every meal, and second helpings weren't discouraged. i didn't know better, or like i said- even the fact that i was overweight until i was a size 12 in jr.high and being picked on for being fat. that being said i turned my insecurites to food for comfort. food was my friend, it would never make fun of me. as i got bigger and bigger, i realized i had a problem and i have tried and failed at every diet out there. i gained over 100 lbs purly as a result of "dieting". its taken me a very long time to realize that the only way to lose weight & to keep it off is through lifestyle changes and those changes are hard. skylana is right i don't do everything i need to do to make those changes. I'm sure if i did, i would lose some of the weight. however, when you don't know and you haven't had to deal with it, its very hurtful to be judged. i am not some lazy slob who sits on my fat ass and eats bon-bons all day- so please don't assume. i am a hard working, intelligent individual with a lot of talent in many different fields. i have had trouble finding employment... all because there was a skinnier person with equal qualfications. i have trouble buying clothes that are cute, because for some reason many clothing lines that make plus size clothes think they have to be frumpy outfits that my grandma would wear! ummm no thanks! there are a few stores that have caught on, but i feel its still discrimination. if you go out and say wow, that black chick is such a nasty whore... you are labled a racist and its not cool. or if you say, man i wish those mexicans would all go back to mexico.. those are all things that are not cool or acceptable to say and most people in your peer group would be offended. if someone is gay, and you call them a faggot its practically looked at as a hate crime. also, until recently i thought i was fat because of my genes... till i did a little soul searching and put a little elbow grease into my diet research and added an exercise routine to my already hectic life. for as happy as i thought i was before, i can tell you i feel A MILLION TIMES BETTER at almost 60lbs lighter... sucks that some people are shallow and treat you differently because of the way you look, but nothing compares to how good it feels to know you are doing your body a favor by taking good care of yourself... i think most people who are overweight but feel they eat healthy are missing the part about regular excercise. to continue the fatcism discussion...people do not choose to be black, mexican, or gay - they are born that way and they can never change it. (unless you're michael jackson, but that clearly didn't go so well, so...)
people CAN change their weight. period. i understand that some people are genetically predisposed to have a larger body type, but people are genetically predisposed to have bad skin (i do, and i do many things to try to control it), or heart disease, or allergies - and these people take control of their lives and do the things they can to make themselves as healthy as possible. to equate being discriminated against for being fat with racism or homophobia is like comparing apples and oranges - both fruits, but quite different.
i have tattoos. a LOT of tattoos. they are beautiful and well done pieces of art, mostly asian inspired, and they are misunderstood by a section of the population. i have experienced what i like to call "tattoo discrimination" in many areas, including employment. but i did this to myself, and i would never dream of comparing it to being called a faggot or a nigger. in a similar fashion, YOU are choosing your weight. there are many things to do to take control of your weight, and the most important one is accepting personal responsibility for it. then moderation, diet, and exercise. it's deceptively simple, but requires a great deal of self-control, something many people do not have.
i HAVE been called nasty names for being a jew, and i HAVE been called a crack whore (ps i've never even seen crack in my life) and asked insulting questions about having an eating disorder, both in reference to my slender build, and quite frankly i wasn't overly offended by ANY of it.

well i've always been overweight and i did get made fun of a LOT when i was young. now that i'm 21 i'm obviously old enough to know how to loose weight and be healthy. but even from all the knowledge i have about being healthier, i can't seem to do it. i guess it's because i've been conditioned for so many years to just eat what tastes good and i've had the mentality that "you only live once so why not eat it and enjoy it" or whatever.
i hate eating something and then feeling guilty because i know i shouldn't have eaten it. and its especially hard when people in my life (like my boyfriend) eat shitty food like doritos. i know those are addicting because of MSG and i know they are so bad for me but they taste good to me. when they are in the house its ridiculously hard not to eat them.
i'm sick of being a fat ass and i want to do something. i also have lots of pain/headaches and other health issues every day and i know eating healthy would help that.
i'm a vegetarian and i've heard people say, why aren't you super skinny/healthier if you don't even eat meat? and i know its because of all the dairy and sweets.
what i want to know is do you have any suggestions to condition myself to go to the healthy side? i want to be grossed out when i eat doritos or candy. i want to crave healthy foods. what foods should i avoid, like white flour? i am also worried about my boyfriend because he is too very over weight and when i say like "don't buy that" he gets all defensive. do you have any resources or suggestions of your own?
any help would be appreciated.
oh and by the way have you read the book "skinny bitch"? it inspired me for a while but its so radical that i forgot about it after a few weeks.

anonymous- i think that's really awesome that you want help with this... its certainly super crazy hard and probably close to impossible without help.... i put a lot of tips on my 'you asked' post... its easier to do stuff one at a time though.. like stop drinking any kind of soda or juice, just start by only drinking water... once thats in full effect than go to the next thing like stop eating chips and eat carrots with hummus or something (raw carrots make you burn more calories than they consist of just by you chewing them haha..) people are weirded out by hummus but its probably just that you haven't had it a lot or haven't had a great flavor... i get mediteranian hummus from trader joes and it is THE BEST with carrots. i NEVER used to like healthy food and the reason i changed was because i got pregnant and i didn't want my fetus growing on donuts and hot dogs.. it was sooo hard but my husband wouldn't let me eat crap anymore... it was nice cause he grew up in a home where they ate healthy. but you can do it. you have to make that stuff not available at your house or you will eat it. if that means your boyfriend 'suffers' cause of it then so be it, this is good for you and he shouldn't NOT hold you back from doing what is best for you if he really loves you. if you want you can email me and we can talk more in detail about it and that way it wont be over comments for the world to read... ibloomblaum@hotmail.com -skylana
