This doesn't really mean anything, though. they never dug into the REAL question which is WHY the c-sections were done.

"Experts have long suspected that the rise in C-sections was linked to an increased in preterm births, Fleischman said. "The challenge now is to sort out what percent of these C-sections are based on less than optimal medical indications," he said."

the thing is they dont have to know the exact reasons to know something unacceptable is going on because there are standards already set in place for what is an acceptable percentage of c-sections and at 1 in 3 women having a c-section in our country we are 15-20% above that acceptable standard according to the world health organization. just the fact that you can elect to have one with no medical reason at all is a sign that america is way off. there are a lot of facts and different resources on my blog from me and from other friends who have looked into this kind of stuff in older posts... if you're really interested.... but basically this article just confirms what was already obvious, if more and more women have their babies taken out before they are due, there will be a rise in preterm births.. which isn't healthy for our women and children as a whole, so we need to figure out how to fix this.... something the midwifery community has been saying for years.

i think the main thing is to clarify the whys. obviously there is a time and a place for a c-section, take us for example. definite medical reason. as far as electively choosing to have your baby early by c-section, without medical cause, completely different thing.

yea you guys had one of the rare TOTALLY legit reasons.. the thing is is there are a lot of c sections done during labor that are due to 'complications' that wouldn't actually be a threat to the babies life if doctors learned some same techniques midwives do or sometimes aren't anyway.... or the fact that there are sky high numbers of c sections done because of the drugs they give to women during labor, and then its this big 'thank god we got the baby out' but the baby would have been fine without the pain medication.... there's a whole conversation and studies about this on my myspace blog i think....
